Included in this site are booklets, articles and information to help families and patients with Psychiatric and Addictive diseases to obtain the knowledge they need to understand their illness and what to do to obtain the treatment they need. This information is separated into two age groups. The Adult (ages 27 and older) and the Young Adult (ages 18-26).
Adult Addiction and Psychiatric Treatment
Please read these booklets:
Adult Psychiatric Disorders and Treatment
Overview of Addiction as a Medical Disease
Young Adult Addiction and Psychiatric Treatment
The young adult (ages 18 – 26) who has an addiction or a psychiatric illness causes heart break for the parent. About the time the parent believes that their child will be leaving home and starting their own life, the parent realizes that their child is incapable to taking care of themselves. A young adult is still in the process of development even when they do not have problems.
The young adult requires a specialized treatment to deal with this child who is in the body of an adult. Some of the young adult’s ego structure may have not developed causing a delay in their maturity. These developmental errors greatly affect the young adult in relationships and in their ability to take care of themselves. Basic life skills, coping skills, communication skills, and how to take responsibility for their life must be part of the treatment.
Parents of a young adult in crisis need all the knowledge they can obtain as to why their child is having these problems and what they can do to get them the help they need. There are three booklets in this website that are a must read:
The Addiction Treatment of the Young Adult
Overview of Addiction as a Medical Disease
